(340) NBC Interview w/prisoner 5
P I still try to look at the guards as people most of the time.
The only thing that really upset me was how sometimes they could seem
totally inhuman and do things you know, like they were almost
mechanical. They were not looking at me as a person–they would demand
me to do something, get disgusted with me–instruct me to do something
without regarding any human qualities, you know, seeing anything human
in me at all. Yet at other times, they would be just like regular people.
You could talk with some of them most of the time, in fact even, the
one guard that everybody sort of agreed was the worst, that we call
John Wayne, at one or two points towards the end, you know I could see
this human characteristic coming through, and yet the other time it was
so unbelievable–his conduct that it upset me that people
that could be the true nature of somebody–I thought that was his true
nature–well, as far as he could put it on so easily, I felt that was
true feelings within himself, that although he was human at other times,
I was really upset by the fact that he could be that way.
